"M" is for Moving

Don't look so goddamned happy!
I'll just come out and say it.

I hate moving.

I hate it with the fiery passion of a thousand suns.

"Where are we going to eat?"
"Well, the floor has some empty space. Let me get the dog bowls."

What don't I like?

The displacement, the disorganization, packing and then unpacking, the living-out-of-suitcases and out of boxes, the whole finding-a-place-for-your-stuff process.  Having to get to know your way around a new place and getting used to a whole new area when you have the sense of direction of a kid who's spun in a circle until they puke.

But there are some things I do like.  I know, I know...you're skeptical; after all, the fiery passion of a thousand suns is quite a lot of hate.  But hate is more directed at the moving process than anything else.  When we find out we're being moved somewhere, I always get excited until I remember there's actual moving involved.

I love finding a great place for our little family to live...yes, I actually enjoy house hunting.  My husband does, too, and it helps that we have similar tastes.  I love that feeling when the house you moved into finally feels like a home.  I love making new friends and enjoying their company.  I love finding new places near our new home to go to enjoy ourselves: restaurants, parks, castles (yes, castles), beaches, etc.  I love seeing parts of the country--hell, the world--that many people only dream of visiting.

Yep, this is pretty accurate. Only it's like this for 3 months.

Moving isn't nearly as bad as it was the first couple of times we did it; the more you do it, the more you get used to it, I guess.  But, that doesn't stop me from dreaming of that day when we buy a house or some land to build on in our happy place, wherever that is, and settle in for the long haul.  Then I will truly feel at home.  Until then, I will be an explorer extraordinaire, even if that means moving.  But, if any of you are working on a teleportation device, hurry up.  I want to buy it, and I have some boxes you can pack it in.

xoxo Sarah

  1. I know EXACTLY what you mean! The worst part is that all of my 'stuff' is displaced. This kills the creative bone in my body until everything has a place again. I simply can't write productively when there's a mess to organize.

    1. Yeah...I had to take a 3-4 month break from writing because I couldn't concentrate on anything else. Such a pain.

  2. I hate moving too. That's why I'll likely die in this house where I currently live because going anywhere else will just be too much work/stress.

  3. I know this may sound a little dramatic, but for me, moving house is TRAUMATIZING! I'm in my third place - which we've bought, so that's IT for me! No more shifting!
I suppose it has its advantages as you've outlined so convincingly... LOL.
    Happy Settling!

    1. Hahaha, thank you! Almost all unpacked. We'll see how it goes.

  4. Moving the last time is what "sold" me on a Kindle. Second floor. 28 double-size plastic crates of books.

Did I mention it was on the second floor? Yes, there are fun things about moving and furnishing a new place, but tell that to my aching back.

    1. Oh my God! Yes, that would make me get a Kindle, too! We're lucky in that we don't have to pack ourselves (mostly), especially the heavy stuff. It's bad enough just unpacking the boxes, not to mention stairs. Ouch!

  5. Hilarious and true! (The "Don't look so damned happy" had me rolling. Hahaha!) You're such are a trooper with all the steps of it. The discombobulation would drive me batty but you handle it with grace. Great entry. :0)

    1. Haha, thank you! I try...there were definitely some points where I was close to a breakdown, though. The good outweighs the bad, that's for sure. :-)

  6. Hmm... I just hate. There is no good. We've been in the new place for more than 6 months, and, basically, anything that's not unpacked isn't going to get unpacked. Which sucks, because there's stuff I need. But there's no place for it.
    Bah on all of it!
    :P

    1. Yeah, we've run into that before...too much stuff, not enough space. Or closets.

  7. i love unpacking, and i love having movers pack us up!
the part i hate about moving is finding new doctors, the address changing & updating drivers license, etc. and its worse w/kids, registering for sports & school, bla bla bla... once you're settled, its all good =)

    1. Ah, yes, the updating...I didn't even think of that. Must have been so traumatic I wiped it from my memory, lol!

  8. I love the first few days of moving. It's the weeks (or months) later when you still have boxes unpacked and rooms that have no sense of purpose.
